This week was no exception to our typical new-unit Monday! On (most) Mondays, the room activities change to match the new unit theme. It makes Monday a day of exploration. Gone was the rice in the texture table in its place we had split peas with a castle, dragons, maidens, wizards and a few knights in somewhat shiny armor and a treasure box for hiding!

Last week the water tub had chocolate cloud dough, this week it has dirt, lots of crawling critters, little shovels and rakes, tongs and bug catchers.

The light table had colorful slotted builder.

The students watercolored small and large doilies at the art table. After drying, these were assembled into crowns…

…and bejeweled at the creation station on Tuesday. Most of the kids wore them for the rest of the day!

The students played a game at the second table with the parent helper. The goal with all the games is for the students to learn to take turns and to be good sports whether you win or lose.

The building table had some great snap together pieces with wheels for some creative building.

On Tuesday the students planted green bean seeds. We don’t know if they are magic beans like in the stories we are reading, we’ll just have to wait and see! The students planted 3 seeds each in a see-through cup so we will be able to check the seeds growth daily.

Working with the Jack in the Beanstalk theme, the students drew a castle on a piece of paper and added some clouds (cotton balls) to simulate the giant’s castle above the clouds. Teacher Lisa took each of the kids pictures acting like giants, added them to their castle drawing and placed that into their bean plant cups. They turned out so cute!

On Wednesday, the students worked on a journal page with the question, “If I had a hen that laid golden eggs…” then draw a picture to go with their answer. There were some fun answers and lots of gold and glitter for their artwork.

Giant green numbered foot prints were out in the hall for number recognition practice and careful foot placement!

Puzzles and games change often and this group loves to try them all.

May the creativity never end!

Match animal tops and bottoms on the magnetic board, or not! Some silly animals were created!

Around the room there was draw a face activity on a plastic lid, building, dress-up, picnicing and a little bit of everything!

On Thursday the students made some fun collages with dried beans, sunflower seeds and corn at the art table. They used glue to make a shape and got some great fine motor skill practice putting one seed on at a time. At the second table they put a heart, a gold dragon coin and a sticker into their memory boxes. Lots to remember in February with Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year, Panda experiences, chocolate play dough and chocolate cloud dough, etc.

Panda has had so much fun at everyone’s homes. The kids are doing such a great job telling us what they did with Panda. After they finish telling us about Panda’s adventure they call on 3 friends to ask a question or give a comment.

Fun songs to move to and lots of books about Jack and the Beanstalk!

A little bit of everything during our outdoor time!

Next week we look forward to watching our bean plants grow and enjoying some stories and activities about the three little pigs!

See you Monday,

Teachers Jelena and Lisa
