A few words from our Director…
I came to Small Friends in 2003, when my husband and I were looking for a preschool for our son. Prior to starting a family, I had been an elementary school teacher for 10 years, working with children in grades 1–3. I was thrilled to find a preschool where the staff were so knowledgeable about child development and the environment was inviting and engaging. Two years later, I joined the staff as a preschool teacher and the following year I became the Director. I love the relationshiups that develop between families and teachers as they work together in the classrooms. It is a privilege to share this part of children’s early childhood journeys and to explore, create, laugh and play with them every day

Jelena Mrdjan

“Hello, my name is Jelena (pronounced Yell-en-ah) Mrdjan and I am fortunate to be joining the Small Friends community to continue following my passion and my 12 year journey of teaching preschool. I am very excited to be here!! I have called SW Portland home for almost 30 years. My husband and I have two wonderful college-aged daughters and a fluffy white terrier mix, Penny. Both of our daughters attended a local co-op preschool and had memorable experiences. Watching our daughters grow during their preschool years cemented how instrumental those years are to a child’s emotional, social and physical development. My goal is to teach the whole child, equip them with a love of learning, and to foster independence. I am delighted to be on this wonderful preschool journey with you and your child!”
