It was like an apple fest this past week with all our fun apple projects! Apple pie in a cup was our first project on Monday. The students crushed a graham cracker then put the crumbs into a cup, cut up an apple wedge or two and put them in an insta pot. They took turns mashing and stirring and when it was ready, the parent helper scooped it into their cups. At snack time they enjoyed the fruits of their labor with a squirt of whipped cream. Yum!
On Monday at the math/science table the kiddos enjoyed a game of ABC Apple Bingo! Spin the spinner, name the letter and mark your sheet with an apple disc. Great letter recognition happening around the room.
On Tuesday, the students made some beautiful apple art using a red apple cut horizontally to show the star in the center and a green apple cut vertically for a different print. So pretty.
At the second table on Tuesday, the students wrote their name and decorated a page with apples by drawing with markers or using Do-a-dots. Then they were measured in apples! They helped count the apples and wrote (or traced) the number on their page. This page will go into their portfolios.
Our Wednesday project at the art table was for the students to practice sewing a button (a non-apple activity). We used a new rug pad, tipped yarn for the needle, and large, colorful buttons! It’s a great fine motor, concentration, and hand-eye coordination activity.
At the second table the students built a tree and tried to balance some apples on it! The trunk was a TP/paper towel tube, the branches were green popsicle sticks and some red pom pom for the apples. Challenging fun! A steady hand and a calm body helped keep the tubes standing.
A cat game requiring cat toys and that inspired a “real” sewing project! As one of the students said “with a real needle and thread!”. It was a super popular activity for both Wednesday and Thursday. You might have been the recipient of a new “pillow” approx size 1 1/2” x 3” 🙂 The kids loved it and did so well sewing and waiting for their needles to be threaded or their pillow to be held!
Apples were back on Thursday and we had some fun with bubble wrap! The students painted a small and/or large bubble wrap square in red or green paint then flipped it and pressed it down onto an apple shape. Most of the students pressed the bubble wrap on top of each other verses spreading them out and they turned out great!
The students made a squishy balloon squeeze ball to take home with them at the second table on Thursday. They chose a balloon color and counted out over 20 scoops of salt to make a nice sized ball.
Our builders are getting so sophisticated! They make lots of building plans and sketches in the fine motor area to get ready to build. This week, when the sewing circle took over the fine motor area, they relocated and built their office elsewhere! We put out Duplos at the build table, there was a lot of action there too!
We had a litter of kittens and a new puppy named Cloud Puff come to play and lounge.
We hid “apple-bets” around the room. Find the apple letter and match it on the apple tree!
The light table was adorned with red, green and yellow translucent blocks for stacking as tall as you could go!
The water tub had warm, sudsy water with foam apples, pie tins, cups and egg beaters! The egg beaters made the water foamier!
You could find us doing all kinds of fun activities around the room!
Playing outside!
As always, we read lots of stories, sang songs and moved during rug times.
Next week we look forward to a unit on leaves with leaf observations and drawings.
We will see you tomorrow!
Warmly,
Jelena and Lisa
