Panda week started off with Panda Day on Monday, full of panda activities at each table and lots of excitement. The students could dress like Panda or not (something black and white) and partake in a variety of panda activities. At the art table the students made a headband to wear.
This class is so good with the fuse beads (great fine motor skill builder)! We had the fuse beads at one end of the creations station table and chenille pipe cleaners with pony beads for bracelets or necklaces for themselves or for a stuffy at the other end.
The students drew a panda and wrote the word panda on their art work at the second table with teacher Lisa.
Black glittery sand with gems, tubes, tiny funnels, tiny rakes and of course a few pandas were at the light table.
At the building table we had pandas, various bamboo sticks, rocks, a wagon and wheel barrel with a picnic table; just a lot of fun!
A panda forest scene took shape in the texture table. Pandas were ferried across the green forest, gems were unearthed and oh so many more interesting stories!
Just before recess on Monday, each student received their very own panda to take home and keep! Some very happy students!
A Giant flower in the style of artist Georgia O’Keefe was the art project on Tuesday. With instructions and a sample by the parent helper, the kids did a fabulous job of filling their page with lots of color. These will be up on the bulletin boards for our end of year program.
The students added to their memory boxes for April. A wind-up chick, an egg and a chick sticker along with their favorite school activity from the past month were all safely stored in the box. The kids love to look at these treasures.
On Wednesday we started a 3 part portrait project. The first part was for the students to make a black-line drawing of their face using a marker and a mirror.
Second part on Thursday was to add skin color and the third part they add their features will be next week.
The kids were asked a few questions about their moms that they answered, signed their name on the card then decorated an envelope for a part of their Mother’s Day gift!
On Thursday they completed their Mother’s Day gift by planting a couple of Verbenas into their handprint pots. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful moms!
So many of our Painted Lady Butterflies emerged from their chrysalises that we were able to sit and hold them in the butterfly tent on Thursday! The students did so well being gentle. We took the tent out during recess and released them into the wild. We could not have asked for a nicer day to release them! Each student will have a picture of themselves holding a butterfly in their portfolio.
Here are some more pictures of what the kids did during free choice time.
We enjoyed our time on the rug with stories and songs and dancing as always. Teacher Christina read a favorite book of hers, Are you my Mother and Teacher Courtney read Thank you, Mr. Panda.
We prefer the sunny days but we go outside regardless because that’s fun too!
We had a very full week celebrating Panda, working on Mother’s Day and watching the butterflies emerge. Our next unit on Monday is on dinosaurs, always a popular topic. Thank you to Teacher Christine and Courtney for subbing in for Teacher Lisa, it was lots of fun!
See you on Monday.
Jelena and Lisa
